Ulceration

We're finding, although there is no immediate danger of him bleeding as he would before, ulceration of the haemangioma is happening easily. The dressing could be the cause, it may now be irritating the birthmark, it could be just 'one of those things' and will continue to ulcerate until its disappeared, we could be handling him too much in that area. Its really hard to know what to do for the best. After his dressing change yesterday, he had another ulcer to his side.
When will it stop?....We hope our trip to London is fruitful and we can report good news in the next post :o)

  1. Thank you again for sharing your experience. It is so helpful for other parents to know of others who are going through similar situations.

I was curious to know what type of dressing material you are using? I recommend my patients to use nonstick (ie Telfa) dressings, or vaseline-impregnated gauze, both of which can be bought at a surgical supply store. Please let me know if I can offer any further advice.

  2. Hi, thanks for comment. As you can see in previous photos (Nov 08 - June 09) I would totally avoid telfa clear. It just kept the infection locked in and NEVER would of healed. His forst dressing that worked at 10 monthd of age was Trimovate ointment, them mepitel, then one wet square and one dry sqaure on top of sorbsan algenate dressing then just gauzes to pad and bandages. This was brilliant at getting the wound to begin to heal as it had just been so so dirty and wet. Before then he was in unbarable agony each dressing change. Please follow the link on the top right to the top video to see how he spent the first ten months of his life before he was helped by Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Thank you .
